A Waterloo man has pleaded guilty to insurance fraud and records tampering.

In a press release, officials with the Iowa Insurance Division Fraud Bureau said they received a complaint that 50-year-old Steven Hoeppner made false statements in support of a claim following an alleged fall outside a local elementary school. The investigation began in May.

According to investigators, surveillance video revealed that no fall occurred as described in Hoeppner’s claim. Hoeppner also allegedly provided falsified documents showing medical appointments and lost wages in an attempt to obtain insurance benefits he was not entitled to.

Authorities charged Hoeppner with one count of insurance fraud-presenting false information and one count of tampering with records. Following his guilty plea, Hoeppner received a five-year suspended prison sentence, up to five years of probation and a suspended $1,375 fine.
