Classes are canceled in the Waterloo School District today after someone made a post on social media Tuesday night, threatening to blow up four buildings.

In a statement, district officials said police and school staff worked throughout the night to investigate the threat posted on Facebook, which targeted East and West High Schools, George Washington Carver Academy, and Central Middle School. A screen shot of the online threat was shared multiple times on social media.

District officials said Wednesday morning that great progress was made in resolving the issue, but more of the investigation needs to be completed before students can return to school. District officials are working with Waterloo police in effort to identify whoever is responsible for making the threat.

Out of an abundance of caution and to allow authorities to complete their investigation, we are canceling school for today," district spokeswoman Tara Thomas said in a press release. "Please know the safety of our students is our first priority. Thank you for your patience."
