Who Had 2016’s Most Overplayed Song?
We asked. You voted. Which song was the most annoying, most rage-inducing, most likely to make you tear your hair out?
It was a VERY tight race, but congrats (?) to twenty one pilots for taking the crown! Their song "Heathens" from the Suicide Squad soundtrack got heavy play on rock, alternative and pop radio, making it seemingly impossible to get away from. Add that to the success of their other singles this year--"Stressed Out" and "Ride"--and radio listeners seemed to get their fill 21P in 2K16.
The Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj collabo "Side To Side" also refused to go away. Ariana & Nicki debuted the track at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards in August, and it immediately gained traction with fans of both artists (even though many of them didn't seem to pick up on the song's very suggestive lyrics), dominating radio airplay throughout much of the summer and fall. And it didn't help that T-Mobile featured it in a commercial. "Side To Side" registered the second-most votes in our poll.
Lastly, "Closer" from The Chainsmokers & Halsey also tied for second place according to your votes. Members Drew Taggart and Alex Pall teamed with Halsey for what was, simply put, THE biggest pop song of the past year. "Closer" was inescapable thanks in large part to its catchy-as-hell hook. "Closer" captivated listeners--and probably boosted Land Rover sales--for the bulk of 2016, remaining at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a whopping 12 consecutive weeks.
