Brrrrrr! Wednesday's Temperature Was Waterloo's Lowest Ever

Waterloo--and much of Iowa--set a record on Wednesday. Though, it's probably not a record you want.

At approximately 6:55 a.m. the National Weather Service reported a temperature of -25° (-46° wind chill) at the Waterloo airport, breaking the previous record of -24°, which had stood for 68 years.

Here are some of the other record low temperatures in eastern Iowa overnight:

Cedar Rapids: -24° (the previous record for January 30th was -22°, set in 1951).
Dubuque: -28° (previous record was -25°, set in 1951).
Iowa City: -22° (previous record was -21°, set in 1904).

Low forecast for tonight and early Thursday morning:

Cedar Rapids: -32° (record is -21°, set in 1996)
Dubuque: -31° (record is -24°, set in 1996)
Iowa City: -28° (record is -18°, set in 1996)
Waterloo: -33° (record is -27°, set in 1918)

And just for good measure, here's the all-time record low for each city ...

Cedar Rapids: -29° (Jan. 15th, 2009)
Dubuque: -32° (Jan. 7th, 1887)
Iowa City: -31° (Jan. 22nd, 1930)
Waterloo: -34° (Jan. 16th, 2009)

Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself next winter. Looking ahead, CBS 2 is calling for high temperatures in the upper-30s for Saturday and 40s for Monday & Tuesday. Break out the flip-flops!
