The Federal Bureau of Investigation is cautioning students about a phone scam trying to con them out of money.

FBI field offices in at least eight states--including Wisconsin, Nebraska & Iowa--have received multiple calls reporting the scam, which uses fake phone numbers resembling those of local FBI offices.

A person claiming to be an FBI agent calls the victims demanding repayment of debts such as school loans, tuition or unpaid parking tickets. In some cases, the caller threatens the victim with arrest and not graduating from school if payment isn't immediately made.

Federal organizations such as the FBI or IRS will never call people demanding money.

The FBI says there are several steps you can take to protect yourselves from any fraud:

  1. Contact your bank.
  2. Contact any of the three major credit bureaus and request an alert to be placed on your file.
  3. Notify police if you feel that you're in danger.
