Gotten Caught By A Traffic Camera In Iowa? You Might Get Your Money Back
I like to think that I'm a pretty decent driver, but I've been hit with more than a few speeding tickets thanks to Iowa's traffic cameras. However, many complaints have led to serious talks about the long-term future of these cameras.
The state is evaluating whether or not to keep the traffic cams, which could lead to thousands of citations being paid back.
Cedar Rapids alone has seven cameras, the most of any city that uses the program, and generates between $3-3.5 million annually from them. While the cameras have led to fewer accidents, critics contend that the argument to keep them is solely based on money and not safety.
If the cameras are ruled illegal, drivers could get reimbursed for every ticket issued, which would cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars--and likely more.
