After serving amazing food for nearly three decades, a popular Iowa restaurant is set to close this weekend.

There is just something about a great local, family-owned restaurant. A popular spot for fantastic food in Altoona, Iowa for nearly 30 years has been Claxon's Smokehouse and Grill. The restaurant located at 3131 8th Street SW in Altoona has been wowing customers with barbeque, steaks, seafood, and more since 1996. But KCCI reports that owner Andy McReynolds says the time is right for him to retire and take a step back.

McReynolds opened up Claxons in April of 1996, according to KCCI. Since then he has spent nearly half of his life serving up made from scratch food from family recipes. One of the most popular dishes at Claxons is his grandmother's banana cream pie! But they were also known for their amazing and award-winning barbeque dishes like ribs, burnt ends, and chicken.

According to a Facebook post, McReynolds says the building on 8th Street has been sold to new owners who plan on opening a new restaurant in the same location. They hope to be open for business near the holiday season. KCCI reports that Claxon's will close its doors for good on Sunday, so you still have a few days left to enjoy its amazing food. McReynolds stated that this last week of business is all about honoring his employees. That is why he is donating the net sales from his final week of business to his employees. He says it will help them in the transition from this job to the next.
