A chef responsible for some of the most popular and acclaimed restaurants in the Tri-States is now setting his sights on pizza as his next venture.

Per Telegraph Herald, Chef Kevin Scharpf is set to open a new pizzeria on Asbury Road in Asbury. The restaurant is Lloyd's Pizza Co, and signage for the building has been up for several weeks at their location at 4949 Asbury Road. Chef Scharpf is also the owner of Brazen Open Kitchen + Bar in downtown Dubuque; Otto's Place in Galena; Birds. food truck; and Lola, a popup bakery.

Lloyd's Looks to Fill a Void in the Area:

Lloyd's Pizza Co. will serve 10 types of Neapolitan-style pizzas, authentic Italian-inspired appetizers, salads, gelato, and more, per Telegraph Herald. Neapolitan pizza originated and remains popular in Naples, and differs from typical pizza thanks to its soft, thin dough that rises higher to hold the ingredients therein like a pie.

Spearheaded by Chef Scharpf and co-owner David Hannaman, Lloyd's looks to open the week of August 17th with "controlled reservations" before building to full capacity in the neat future. The restaurant has one commercial brick oven, composed of volcanic material imported from the Naples region. The oven, crafted by Marra Forni, was built by hand, and can rotate eight 12-inch pizzas at once. Lloyd's will cook the pizzas at a lower temperature than the usual Neapolitan pizza in order to create a crispier pie.

The hope for Lloyd's is that patrons order multiple pizzas to try different flavors. Dips will also be offered so that additional flavor can be applied to the crust. But the experience doesn't start and stop with pizza.

The Telegraph Herald notes that each table at Lloyd's will have a bowl of popcorn on it; regular or "Lloyd's way," which includes grated parmesan, olive oil, and a specialty seasoning. Appetizers include things like garlic cheese bread, roasted olives, artichoke, and whipped ricotta. House, Italian chop, and Caesar salads will also be available. Vegetables and pizza toppings are locally sourced from a handful of different places, including:

  • Iowa Food Hub
  • HillTop Greens in Dyersville
  • Wisconsin's Grande Cheese Co.
  • Orlando Foods in New Jersey (imported Italian ingredients for pizza)

Save Room for Dessert:

Lloyd's will also have a gelato counter, complete with vanilla, chocolate, and other seasonal flavors. A bar in the dining area will offer six-to-eight cocktails looking to reflect Italian-style cuisine, including an amaretto sour and Aperol spritz; beer, wine, and champagne will also be served.

Chef Scharpf has long desired to break into the Asbury community, so people on the west end of town didn't have to commute to the downtown district to experience his food. The location of Lloyd's will also have a patio space for a few dozen people, with overflow seating in the basement.

You can find out more about Lloyd's Pizza Co. coming to Asbury, as well as their ingredients, on the Telegraph Herald's website. You can also follow Lloyd's on Facebook to get updates on their official opening.
