Words We Need To Stop Saying In 2019
Lake Superior State University issues a List of Banished Words every year. The list is made up words and phrases that are either useless, overused, used incorrectly, or just flat out annoying. Here are some examples from 2019:
- "Wrap my head around"
- "Ghosting"
- "Collusion"
- "-OTUS" acronyms, like POTUS (President of the United States), FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) and SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States).
- "Thought leader" (I'd honestly NEVER heard of this until today)
- Using "optics" in place of "appearance" (The optics of the situation aren't very good).
- "Wheelhouse" (Admittedly, I'm not sure why this is a cliche that's stuck around as long as it house. Who has ACTUALLY seen a wheelhouse?)
- "Yeet" (This originated as an exclamation of excitement, which then gained popularity through a Vine video in 2014, and has now been immortalized as a meme. I'm annoyed just typing this.)
This is probably my favorite one, though ... "legally drunk." According to someone named Philip from Auburn, Indiana, "You’re a little tipsy. That’s legally drunk. People who are ticketed for drunk driving are actually 'illegally drunk,' and we should say so."
Philip is very wise. Check out the complete list HERE. Got any other suggestions? Leave a comment below!
