Winter Storm WARNING Tuesday-Wednesday

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for most of Iowa. The warning runs from 9 AM Tuesday to 6 AM Wednesday.

This storm is expected to bring widespread heavy snowfall along with freezing rain. The National Weather Service in Des Moines says that greatest amount of snow will fall north of Interstate 80.

Snow totals are expected to be in the range of 4-8" or more with snowfall rates of 1-2" PER HOUR. The heaviest snow will fall Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The NWS says that travel will be extremely difficult at times, especially Tuesday afternoon into the overnight.

The most recent time that the Waterloo-area received over 4" of snow on a single day was on February 20, 2019 when 4.9" was reported at the Waterloo Municipal Airport.

The most recent time over 6" of snow fell in a single day was 7.6" on February 17, 2019.

What's the difference between a Winter Storm Watch and a Winter Storm Warning?

A winter storm watch is issued to provide 12 to 36 hours advance notice of the possibility of severe winter weather. A watch is upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning when 6" of snow or sleet is expected in the next 12 hours, or 8" or more in 24 hours, or sleet of 1/2" or more is expected.
