The first big snowstorm of the season is set to impact the state of Iowa. Extreme Northwestern Iowa will see the most snow, possibly up to 12 inches, while the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area could see 1-3”, with a mixture of ice possible before the snow begins to fall early Saturday morning along with gusty winds, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory in the Cedar Valley.

The Weather Channel has given the name of “Atticus” to this storm. This is the first winter storm to be named by The Weather Channel this season, which they began doing in 2012.

From the National Weather Service in Des Moines:

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 AM ON SATURDAY. 

WHAT...Mixed precipitation is expected. Total snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions and reduced travel times.

The Winter Weather Advisory includes the counties of Humboldt, Wright, Franklin, Butler, Bremer, Sac, Calhoun, Webster, Hamilton, Hardin, Grundy, Black Hawk, Crawford, Carroll, Greene, Boone, Story, Marshall, and Tama.

19 Counties in Northern Iowa are in a Winter Storm Warning. Cities like Estherville, are expecting anywhere from 6-12 inches of snow.

The daily record for snowfall on December 11 in Waterloo is seven inches, set in the year 2000, according to weather.gov.
