Since 1895, it has only snowed in the month of May a just handful of years in Waterloo, most recently in 2013.

On May 2, 2013, it snowed 1.2” in Waterloo and the next day, a half-inch of snow fell. The high temperature on May 2, 2013, was just 39 and only 36 on May 3, 2013 -- both record lows. In that same time period, Allison and Hampton reported 9" while Grundy Center accumulated 8.5".

The day before this snowstorm hit the area, Waterloo had a record-high of 83* on April 30th.

The same early-May snowstorm of 2013 produced 13" in Osage. That amount set a new state record for Highest May Storm Total Snowfall. (The prior record was 10" in Le Mars in 1947) It was also the latest snow storm to produce over a foot of snow.

The town of Mellen -- in extreme Northern Wisconsin -- had over 21" of snow from this storm.

2013 was third snowiest month of May in the history of Waterloo. The snowiest month of May since 1895 in Waterloo was a total of 2” in 1945 and 1947.

Prior to the snowfall in May 2013, it had also snowed a trace on May 1 and May 2, 2005.

There has never been accumulating snow in the month of June in Waterloo. Let's hope that doesn't change this year. :)
